1 . Has Lushkoff become a beggar by circumstance or by choice?
Ans: According to me, Lushkoff was not a born beggar. He became a beggar by circumstance and not by choice. Lushkoff sang in a group of organized Russian singers who performed in church or other public platforms but he was thrown out of that group because of his drunkenness. After that he never tried to find some other sources of earnings. He was not ready to work hard and so he chose to beg instead of doing any respectful job.
2 . What reasons does he give to Sergei for telling lies?
Ans: When Lushkoff was begging as he had nothing for three days Sergei recognized him that it was the same person whom he met the previous day. The beggar introduced himself as a student who was expelled from the school but today he said he was a village school teacher. Sergei caught his lies . On being asked, Lushkoff accepted that he was lying and started saying the truth. He said he sang in a group of organized Russian singers but he was thrown out of that group because of his drunkenness. He told lies so that he can get help from people if he would have said the truth nobody would have helped him. So he decided to lie.

3 . Is Lushkoff a willing worker? Why, then , does he agree to chop wood for Sergei ?
Ans: According to me, Lushkoff was unwilling to work. He was neither physically stable not mentally prepared for doing the work. Moreover, he was a middle-aged man so he didn’t had enough stamina and strength to chop woods . His drinking habits became his biggest enemy. It made him physically weak to handle such a physically active work.
Lushkoff, keeping aside his physical weakness agreed to work for Sergei. He did this because he was trapped in his own lies and he was also shameful for telling lies. So, he couldn’t deny Sergei’s offer.
4 . Sergei says, “ I am happy that my words have taken effect”. Why does he say so? Is he right in saying so?
Ans: Sergei gave Lushkoff the work of packing and shifting the furniture in his new house. Sergei said those above-quoted words because he was extremely happy, pleased, and satisfied to watch Lushkoff working hard instead of begging. Being satisfied, he praised Lushkoff and handed him a rouble for his work.
No, according to me he was not right in saying that. The reason behind this is Lushkoff was still the same. He was not even doing a single work. He did not touch a single furniture. Even he didn’t pretend to show that he was busy. So, we can conclude that he still did not work hard for his living and hence he was not praiseworthy.
5 . Lushkoff is earning thirty five roubles a month . How is he obliged to Sergei for this?
Ans: At the beginning, Lushkoff was found begging by lying about his identity. It was Sergei who caught him lying. After knowing the reason of his begging, Sergei offered him to work as a wood chopper at his home . Later on, while shifting Sergei called Lushkoff to help him and being satisfied Sergei gave him a rouble. Then , it was Sergei who have sent him to one of his friends house to do a job of writing. Hence , Sergei was like a god father in the life of Lushkoff who always tried to provide him with some work and earning so that he stops begging.

6 . During their conversation Lushkoff reveals that Sergei’s cook, Olga, is responsible for the positive change in him. How has Olga saved Lushkoff?
Ans: Olga played a very important role in changing Lushkoff. She was the main source of positivity in Lushkoff’s life. Olga always insulted and criticized him but at the very next moment she turned sad and started weeping by seeing his condition. By seeing the poor condition of Lushkoff , Olga chopped woods for him and also did other works for him. Lushkoff was very pleased to see that lady and her efforts for changing his life and that’s why a positive change took place in Lushkoff’s life.

Ans: Begging is a major problem in our country India . Beggars can be noticed in almost every public places and day by day the count is increasing. There are some group of people who have made begging their business and a source of earning by not working hard.
Begging is increasing day by day and this is probably due to the lack of education and job opportunities in India. The government must take necessary steps in spreading education, especially in rural areas. The financially backward families should be provided with economic support so that they can set up their own work instead of begging. The beggars can be used as daily laborers. For the handicapped beggars, the beggar’s home should be set up by the government. Begging should not be encouraged and it creates an obstruction in the way of progress.
