_ Johnsy was a young artist who shared a small flat with Sue. In the month of November, Johnsy became seriously ill. She was suffering from pneumonia. Her condition was getting worse day by day.  Johnsy did not move and lied down in her bed the day gazing outside the window.

Sue became very worried and she consulted the doctor. The doctor visited their flat almost daily but there was absolutely no improvement in Johnsy’s condition. The doctor clearly said that Johnsy was not willing to live and so no medicines could cure her. Johnsy made up her mind that as soon as the last leaf on the creeper would fall , she would die. So , it was very important for Johnsy to bring back her willingness to live.

2 . Do you think the feeling of depression Johnsy has is common among teenagers?

_  Teenage is a period when the youth gets easily influenced by emotions. In this age, it is very common to have sudden mood swings. Sometimes you may feel very happy, sometimes depressed, sometimes anxious. The feeling of depression may come for various reasons such as unable to achieve something for which you have worked very hard or because of tough competition and many more. Life has two aspects, positive and negative. You can’t always remain happy . Sometimes you have to face the difficult situations but it’s up to you whether you will run away from the problems or face them with positive outlook. The one who faces the difficulties boldly will always keep hope and move forward to achieve their goals.

3 . Behrman has a dream. What is it? Does it come true?

_ Mr. Behrman was a sixty years old painter. His biggest dream was to draw a masterpiece. He always kept on imagining but never drew a single line. He was waiting for the correct time to give his imagination a practical shape through his painting but he failed to do so.

Yes, Behrman’s dream of drawing a masterpiece came true. In the stormy when the last leaf fell down from the creeper, Behrman visualized the ivy leaf, drew it and hanged that in the same position. Although this did not give him any fame but this was a masterpiece in true sense as it gave Johnsy the willingness to live and saved her life.

4 . What is Behrman’s masterpiece? What makes Sue to say so?

_ Behrman was a sixty years old painter whose dream was to draw a masterpiece but he never drew a single line in order to start painting his masterpiece. But at last Behrman was successful in drawing the masterpiece. He drew the ivy leaf and hanged it after the last leaf fell down from the creeper. This did not gave him fame but this saved Johnsy’s life.

Sue considered Behrman’s drawing as masterpiece as it was impossible to differentiate that whether it was a real leaf or a painting. Moreover, it brought back Johnsy’s willingness to live which saved her life. Hence, it was a masterpiece in true sense.

These often makes us depressed and dejected. We lose interest in everything. This is very common in today’s competitive world. There are people who will encourage us in every situation and give proper suggestions so that we can come out of the difficult situation. On the other hand there are people who will discourage us at every point but it’s up to us whether we will prove them right or take their discouragements as a challenge and prove them wrong.

When I feel depressed or dejected, either I listen to loud music or do meditation to divert my mind or read a book. According to me, we must enjoy our lives to the fullest as we won’t get back the time which we have wasted on useless thoughts.
