1 . What were the drops of the rain actually? Why did they fall?

_ One night the swallow came to the city and took shelter near the feet of the Prince’s statue. satisfied as he got a golden shelter but after some time, a large drop of water fell on him and then two more drops fell on him simultaneously. He became irritated and decided to leave and find a new shelter. As he was preparing to leave he became amazed. He saw that those were not raindrops instead they were the tears of the Prince and his eyes were filled with tears which were rolling down through his golden cheeks.

The reason behind the Prince’s tears was when he was alive he lived happily in his palace and did not know what sorrow was. But now when he is dead and they build a tall statue, he could see all the miseries and sufferings of the people which made him feel heartbroken.

2 . How did the Prince helped the two children which were lying in each other’s arms to protect themselves from the freezing cold?

_ The swallow flew around the city and noticed that in the freezing cold two boys were lying under the archway of the bridge, on each other’s arms to protect themselves  and were whispering to themselves, “ How hungry we are!” Then the watchman shouted at them and said them to leave the place . The swallow immediately informed this to the Prince. He ordered the swallow to pluck out all the gold from his body leaf by leaf and distribute them among the poor. The swallow followed the order accordingly and distributed the gold among the poor children. In this way the Prince helped the poor children.

3 . How did the swallow help the Happy Prince?

_ The swallow was planning to go Egypt like his friends and on his way he rested on the feet of the Prince’s statue. There he came across the Prince’s reason of misery. The Prince requested the swallow to become his messenger.

The Prince requested the swallow to give the ruby to the seamstress whose boy was suffering from high fever and was demanding for oranges. The swallow hopped inside the house and gave the ruby to the seamstress. Next , on Prince’s command the swallow plucked out the sapphires from the Prince’s eyes and gave them to the young writer and to the little matchgirl. After plucking the sapphires the Prince became blind and the swallow flew around the city and informed the Prince about the sufferings of the people. At last the Prince ordered the swallow to pluck out all gold leaf by leaf from his body and distribute it among the poor . The swallow followed the orders accordingly and proved himself a trustworthy messenger.

4 . Is the title of the story “The Happy Prince” apt? Give the reason to justify your answer.

_ According to me the title of the story “The Happy Prince” is not apt.  Instead “The Happy Prince and the swallow” would be an apt title.

The reason behind this is that the swallow helped the Happy Prince every time and he too sacrificed his desire to go to Egypt. The swallow became his messenger throughout the story and when the Prince became blind the swallow flew over the city to observe the sufferings of the people and inform that to the Prince. Without the help of the swallow, it was not possible for the Prince to execute his kindness and help the needy ones. The swallow did a commendable job and so according to me “The Happy Prince and the swallow” would be a better title to the story.

5 . What happened at the end of the story?

_ The swallow helped the Prince for long but at last, the swallow grew colder and colder and he tried very hard to keep himself warm but he couldn’t. At last, the swallow kissed the Prince and then died near his feet. There was a cracking curious sound inside the statue. Next day the town councillors saw that the statue became dull and decided to melt it in a furnace and throw the dead bird but the workmen noticed a strange thing . He said that the broken lead heart did not melt and they threw it on the dust-heap where they threw the swallow.  

God then ordered one of his angels to collect the precious things of the city and the angel brought the broken heart of the Prince and the dead swallow. God said that it was a correct decision and in his garden of Paradise the swallow would sing forever and the Prince would praise him.

6 . Why did the swallow cry when the Happy Prince asked him to pluck out one of the sapphires?

_  The Prince ordered the swallow to pluck one sapphire for the young writer and the second one for the little matchgirl. The swallow cried when the Prince ordered to do so as after doing that plucking the sapphires the Prince would become completely blind. Moreover, the Prince went through so much sufferings to help the poor and needy ones . This why the swallow got emotional and cried.

7 . Where was the swallow going? Why did he decide not to go there?

_  The swallow was planning to go to Egypt to see all the monuments. He was very eager to go to Egypt and join his friends.

Prince’s kind heart and his act of charities impressed the swallow. Moreover, after giving away the sapphires the Prince became completely blind. So, the swallow decided to be his messenger permanently and sacrificed his desire to go to Egypt.

_ The last thing left with the Prince was the gold leaves which covered his body throughout. The Prince ordered the swallow to pluck out all the gold leaf by leaf and distribute among the poor children. The swallow followed his order accordingly and distributed all the gold leaves to the poor and the needy ones.

9 . How did the Happy Prince help the seamstress?

_ The Prince could see a woman who was lean and whose hands were red , pricked by needles as she was a seamstress. At the corner of the room a boy was lying sick and continuously demanded for oranges. But the poor seamstress couldn’t afford oranges and gave him river water. By seeing this the Prince ordered the swallow to take out the precious ruby from his sword and give it to the seamstress. In this way he helped the seamstress.

_ The young writer was lying on his table covered with papers. He was writing a play for the director but he was unable to complete the play as he was hungry . He had no money to buy food and firewood for himself. By seeing this , the Prince felt pity and ordered the swallow to pluck out one of the sapphires from his eyes and give it to the writer. The swallow followed the instructions of the Prince and delivered that to the young writer.

11 . What happened to the little matchgirl and how did the Prince help her?

_  The little matchgirl had spoiled all the matchsticks by letting them fall in the gutter and she was afraid to go home as her father would beat her severely if she doesn’t bring back home any money . She was sitting on the road and she had no shoes or stockings and had nothing to cover her head in the freezing cold.

The Prince felt extremely sorry for the little matchgirl so he ordered the swallow to pluck out the other sapphire and give it to the little girl so that she can go home without any fear. In this way the Prince helped the little matchgirl.

12 . Describe the statue of the Happy Prince.

_  A very high statue of the Happy Prince was made which was based on tall column. The whole body of the statue was covered with thin, fine gold leaves . The eyes consisted of two precious , rare sapphires which were brought thousands of years ago. It also had a large red ruby fixed in the sword.

13 . Briefly describe the characteristics of the Prince.

_  The Prince was very kind hearted and did not care about himself. When he was alive he always remained happy and never came to know about the sufferings of the common people. After his death a tall statue was made and he could see all the sufferings of the people. This made him feel heartbroken . Later on with the help of the swallow he donated all to precious things that he had to help the needy ones. He never thought of himself. He became blind after donating the sapphires and then his total body was fading out after donating the gold leaves. Hence , the Happy Prince is a great inspiration because of his activities of charities and kind heartedness .

14 . Describe briefly the characteristics of the little swallow.

_ The swallow had a great quality of sacrificing his own desire for helping others. The swallow was very eager to go to Egypt. But after seeing the sad face of the Happy Prince he decided to become his messenger and take part in the activities of the charity. Later on, when the Prince became blind, he flew all over the city, observed everything and informed the Prince about the sufferings. He followed every instruction of the Prince and later on died near the feet of the Happy Prince. The swallow was very loyal, obedient and praiseworthy.

 _ The moral of the story “ The Happy Prince” is that we must always put forward our helping hands towards the poor and needy ones without thinking of ourselves. Life is like a mirror if we do good deeds then one day those good deeds will reflect back on us. At the end of the story, we can see that God had chosen the swallow and the broken lead heart of the Prince to keep in heaven.
