The winds were very strong and beat against the houses and flew many of the houses. Prashant became really terrified as he never witnessed such a furious storm in his lifetime.

The strong winds uprooted the ancient trees. The screams of the people were audible as the heavy rain washed off their houses. The water too swirled into his friend’s house but the building was strong enough to resist the destruction. But they became scared when an ancient tree got uprooted and had fallen on their house. The storm continued for thirty-six hours. The storm killed thousands of people. Many children became orphans and many people lost their houses and became homeless. Dead bodies could be seen everywhere. The storm brought a vast destruction in Ersama.

_ Prashant had a very good quality of leadership. Prashant after seeing the sufferings of the people decided to become their leader and help them. Instead of being nineteenth years, he took the initiative to became the leader while no one else did.

Prashant gathered all the crowd of his village and formed a group of volunteers which included the youth as well as the elders. Then, they gathered the branches of the fallen trees to light up the fire and cook rice in it. The survivors for the first time in four days were able to satisfy their bellies. Prashant decided to form a group of volunteers whose main aim would be to clean the shelter, urine, vomit and to take a note of the injured people. When the military helicopter did not return after the fifth day, Prashant gave an idea, that the children should lie in the sand and put the utensils on their bellies, so that the military helicopters could get a symbol and help them. He also helped the children and the widows to come out of their grief by giving them work in NGOs. Hence, we can conclude that Prashant was a great leader who noticed the sufferings of each and everyone and tried to help them out.

_ Prashant took initiatives in stabilizing the situation after the storm. He organised groups of volunteers for cooking, cleaning purpose and also to take a note of injured ones. Prashant along with the youths helped the other people in providing relief. They too opposed the plan of setting up a separate institution for the orphans and the widows and allowed them to live in their community. For entertainment, Prashant organised sports events. In this way the people of the community helped each other.

Prashant encouraged the women to work so that they can come out of their grief and divert their minds. The women started working in the food-for-work programmes under NGOs . The childless widows were also given the responsibility to look after the orphans so that they could grow up with love and affection .

4 . Why do Prashant and other volunteers resist the plan to set up institutions for orphans and the widows? What do they consider?

_ The destruction caused by the storm took away lives of many people. As a result, many children became orphans and women became widows. Prashant saw the grief in their faces. He and the group of volunteers resisted the plan to setup institutions for them because they thought in those institutions children would not be treated with love and affection and the widows won’t be accepted and would suffer loneliness.

Prashant and the volunteers instead thought of keeping the orphans and the widows in their community where the childless widows would take care of the orphans with love and affection. 5 . Do you think Prashant is a good leader? Do you think young people can get together to help people during natural calamities?

_ According to me, Prashant is an amazing leader. He has a great quality of taking initiatives. This is because, after the storm, no one took initiative to guide the survivors but Prashant being of only 19 years took initiatives for the betterment of the situation. He also focused on every problem. Not only food and cleaning but also he noticed the grief of the orphans and the widows. He tried his level best to keep everyone happy and motivated in their life. He also organised sports events for the children and provided work to women. Prashant is a source of positive energy and motivation. Prashant is a great leader and every youth must follow the footsteps of Prashant.

Yes, according to me, during any natural calamities the young people can get together and help others. This is because young people have great power to motivate others. Moreover, they are full of energy so they can perform all the work under any circumstances. By seeing them others will get inspired which will help them to come out of their grief and work for their living.

Talk about it.

1 . Talk about the preparedness of the community for a natural disaster.

( You can also talk about evacuation plans and rehabilitation, permanent sage shelter, warning system, relief efforts, building materials to withstand cyclone/ flood/ earthquake; that is safe housing, people’s organization of their own rescue; the survival instinct, etc.)

_  Natural disasters can occur any time. As a part of the community , we must be always alert and stand together to protect and help each other. Occurrence of natural calamities are not under our control but to prepare ourselves and to warn others beforehand is under our hands. We can reduce the effect of the disaster by timely taking precautions by preparing a safety rescue building, preserving some food and water , by organising a group of volunteers who will guide the elderly ones during the disaster.
