1 . What does the author notice one Sunday afternoon? And what is his mother’s reaction? What does she do?

_ On a fine Sunday afternoon, the narrator was sitting and doing his homework. It was a cold day so his mother was adding some coal or fuel to keep the fire lit in their fireplace. After some time, the narrator smelled something wrong and suddenly noticed smoke entering inside through the seams of their ceiling. In no time, their house was filled with smoke and they could see nothing.

The narrator and  his mother got panicked and they were unable to see anything. They were searching blindly for their front door and through that door they ran out into their front yard saving their lives. But his mother ran back into their burning house and brought a small metal box which had all the important documents in it. While coming, she dropped the box and crazily went inside to bring the pictures and all the letters of his dead father.

2 . Why does he break down in tears after the fire?

The fire destroyed The narrator’s house completely. After five hours when the fire was set off , he realized that his cat was missing and he was sure that she was not alive anymore. He faced a great loss, the loss of his old school, his house and his cat . He did not prepare to take such huge losses and hence , he broke down into tears.

3 . Why is the author deeply embarrassed the next day in the school? Which words show his fear and insecurity?

_ The fire completely burnt down all his study material, school dress, bags and all other things. Wearing the same dress was embarrassing for him which he wore in the church that morning. The narrator had no shoes to wear. He was not in a proper dress and he walked like a zombie in the school. Everything appeared very strange to him and it frustrated him badly.

The words uttered by him which showed his fear and insecurity were, “ Was I destined to be an outcast and a geek all my life? I didn’t want to grow up, change or have to handle life, if it was going to be this way. I just wanted to curl up and die.”

4 . The cat and the author were very fond of each other. How has this been shown in the story? Where was the cat after the fire? Who brings it back and how?

_ The narrator was very fond of his cat. He loved her since she was a kitten and he grew close attachment to her.  The narrator never left his cat alone. He disturbed her every morning. The narrator loved her so much that he was not ready to accept that his cat was no more with him. He kept on searching for the cat everywhere. After that incident, he missed his cat the most and hence it proves that he was very fond of his little cat.

The fire scared the cat and so she ran away over a mile. After a month, when the narrator and his friends went to visit their house, a stranger lady brought the cat back to him. He was very thankful to the wonderful lady. On the collar of the cat, there was a phone number. But due to the fire, their phones got disconnected and destroyed. The lady took care of the cat and worked very hard for searching his real owner.

5 . What actions of the schoolmates change the author’s understanding of life and people, and comfort him emotionally? How does his loneliness vanish and how does he start participating in life?

_ One day, in school things grew stranger for the narrator. He was getting ready for his gym class and everyone around him asked him to hurry up. He felt quite weird. When he entered his gym class, it was a moment of amazement for him. He saw that on a table there were textbooks, notebooks, school dress, casual dresses and other requirements which his schoolmates arranged for him. It became very difficult for him to trust his own eyes. He couldn’t believe that the people who never spoke to him came up by themselves to talk to him. They showed love, support, care and concern towards the narrator. For the first time after that incident, the narrator found hope and believed that things are going to be as it was earlier. This incident brought back the narrator’s interest in life and he starting participating in life casually.

6 . What is the meaning of “ My cat was back and so was I”? Had the author gone anywhere? Why does he say that he is also back?

_ The situation in his life was frustrating and depressing for the narrator. After the loss of his old school and friends, he faced another loss, the loss of his house and his little cat whom he loved the most. He was not ready to take up more losses in life. But after some days, his new schoolmates showed him love, affection, care and he started enjoying his life as he used to do. But somewhere, the thought of his cat put the narrator in a pensive mood. He loved her so much that he searched for the cat everywhere. One day, a stranger lady gave his cat back to him and that day, he started enjoying his life in a true sense.
