1.From where did the peddler get the idea of the world being a rattrap?

Ans. The rattrap peddler used to sell rattraps. He got the idea of the world being a rattrap from his own experience. He used to sell rattraps and suddenly thought that the whole world was nothing but a rattrap itself. It offers us with baits in the form of food, shelter and other luxurious items and attracts us towards it on the same way in which the rats are attracted for cheese or meat.

2.Why was he amused by this idea?

Ans. The rattrap peddler was amused by this idea because he never expected that kind of hospitality from the crofter. People were hostile to him and always would chase him away. For the first time, he was welcomed and was provided with food and shelter.

1.What made the peddler think that he had indeed fallen into a rattrap?

Ans. After stealing the crofter’s money, he escaped to the forest. It was late December and was cold enough. It was getting darker. At that moment, he realized that he was lost in the forest. He fell down and his death was approaching. This made him realise that he had fallen into a rattrap and there was no way out.

2.Why did the ironmaster speak kindly to the peddler and invite him home?

Ans. The ironmaster was the owner of the Ramsjo Ironworks. He spoke kindly to the peddler and invited him to his home as he mistook him to be his old friend, Neils Olof, the regimental comrade. He thought that his friend’s condition had become worse as a result of which he was bound to choose this profession.
