Question 1. Why did the king want no more talk about the hilsa-fish?
Answer: It being the season of hilsa, fish everybody in the king’s kingdom talked about nothing but hilsa fish. Talks in excess about hilsa fish made the king annoyed and tedious. He grudged saying that no one could stop people talking about hilsa fish. So, he hated people who talked about hilsa fish.
Question 2. What did the king ask Gopal to do to prove that he was clever?
Answer: Considering the fact that no one could stop people the crazy talks about the hilsa fish, the king threw a challenge to Gopal to buy a huge hilsa fish and bring it to the palace without anyone asking anything about hilsa fish. And if he is able to accomplish the challenge, he will be rewarded.
Question 3. What three things Gopal do before he went to buy his hilsa-fish?
Answer: Being a cunning and quick-witted person, Gopal had an exceptional understanding of the psychology of the people. He prepared himself in accordance with it. He got his face half shaved. Then he smeared himself with ash and wore disgraceful rags.
Question 4. How did Gopal get inside the palace to see the king after he had bought the fish?
Answer: After Gopal had bought the fish, he came to the place gate triumphantly and wanted to see the king. But he guards puzzled with his disguise and disgraceful look did not allow him to meet the king. At this Gopal began to dance and sing loudly. When the king heard the crazy singing of person, He asked his men to bring the person before him.
Question 5. Explain how no one seemed to be interested in talking about the hilsa-fish which Gopal had bought?
Answer: To the common people, the most interesting thing was the ridiculous and crazy appearance of Gopal and to them, the hilsa fish was very common. Most of the people thought him to be mad. Some people thought him to be comical and some thought him to be a mystic. They discussed only about his appearance because they were fully engrossed and attracted to his appearance.
